Wingspan 12 to14 mm. One of the more easily recognisable of the Pugs (Eupithecia spp.), with its orange or yellowish abdomen.

The species can be found inhabiting woodland and chalky or limestone downs.

On the wing in June and July.

The small, greenish caterpillars feed on the buds and flowers of Traveller's-joy.

Widespread but local in the southern half of Britain, scarce elsewhere. In a recent survey to determine the status of all macro moths in Britain this species was classified as local.

It appears to be uncommon in Leicestershire and Rutland, where there are few records. L&R Moth Group status = D (rare or rarely recorded).
