A reflexed or occasionally completely resupinate corticoid with a leathery texture and hairy, zonate cap.  The smooth fertile surface does not stain when bruised.  The colour is yellow-orange. 

Stereum subtomentosum is similar but has a narrower connection to the substrate and the smooth undersurface stains yellow if bruised.  Stereum gausapatum, sanguinolentum and rugosum stain red when bruised. The Turkeytail (Trametes versicolor) can look very similar, with zonate fruitbodies, but has tiny pores underneath.

You must photograph the underside as well as the upper surface, and note habitat and substrate.

On dead hardwood trees and fallen branches; occasionally on conifers.

Common and widespread in Britain.

Very common in Leicestershire and Rutland.
