This species has shoots that are 1.5 to 5.5 mm wide and can reach several centimetres in length. The leaves vary between 1 mm and just over 2 mm long. Dense clusters of brown gemmae are usually visible on the tips of the leaf lobes. Both leaf lobes are rounded in shape, and edged with long, marginal teeth. The leaf margins run down onto the stem.

Prefers humid but not excessively wet habitats such as the tops of moss covered sandstone boulders in woodland or more exposed locations, decaying logs with other liverworts, or heathland peat.
