Closely resembles Common Club-rush (Schoenoplectus lacustris) but the stems are more glaucous-grey. It is also usually a shorter plant to about 1.5 metres.

Schoenoplectus tabernaemontani ‘Zebrinus’ is a horticultural cultivar of Grey Club-rush and is known as Zebra Rush (formerly Scirpus zebrinus). It has striking green and creamy white horizontally banded stems which turn orange brown in the autumn.

Mainly coastal in brackish dykes and beside tidal rivers, however it does sometimes occur inland in fresh water.

Flowers June and July.

Perennial

Less common than Schoenoplectus lacustris and mainly coastal, it is infrequent inland.

Uncommon (but probably increasing) in Leicestershire and Rutland. In the 1979 Flora survey of Leicestershire it was found in 2 of the 617 tetrads.
