The cap is initially conical, expanding to a campanulate shape; pale or dark grey with a woolly/scaly surface. The gills are emarginate and also pale grey; the pale grey stipe has a ring near the top.   The smell and taste are mealy. 

There are many other grey Tricholoma, but without a well-defined ring
