Length 11 to 20 mm. Although the patterning varies it is a distinctive species, with the four yellow bands running across its elytra.

It is associated with old woodland but can also be seen on flowers such as umbellifers.

Most regularly encountered during the summer months.

Its larvae are wood-borers in old tree trunks, stumps and logs.

Widespread but rather local distribution it is generally fairly frequent in Britain.

Infrequent in Leicestershire and Rutland.
