Males 6 to 8 mm, females 7 to14 mm. Prosoma greyish brown to dark brown and covered with light grey hairs. Legs mottled or ringed like the forebody and with light hairs. Opisthosoma mottled medium brown and reddish brown, sometimes blackish, with pale spots. The pattern may be composed of bands of colour or chevrons and is quite variable.

On conifers, under bark, on heathland, and frequently near buildings.

Adults Spring to Autumn.

Widespread in south-east England, scattered records further west and north. 

Rare in Leicestershire and Rutland.
