8-9mm. This is one of several very similar black Dolerus species and detailed examination is necessary in order to identify them to species level. This species has a sawsheath on the female that is notably broadened to be a similar width the apical end of the rear tibia. The long hairs on the sawsheath are long and curved inwards. The mesonotum is moderately punctured but only at the lateral sides.

Mainly found in grassland, even in damper areas.

April and May.

Widespread and probably fairly frequent in Britain, but not well recorded.

Uncommon or under recorded in Leicestershire and Rutland. The Broughton Astley specimen of 4th May 2015 is believed to be the first record of this species in VC55.
