Wingspan 10 to 15 mm.

Well wooded areas.

The adult moths fly in one generation, during May and June.

The larva builds a case, covered with small fragments of plant matter and other particles, and feeds on lichens, decaying plant matter and detritus. The larval period usually lasts for two years.

This species has a scattered distribution throughout much of the British Isles. In the Butterfly Conservation's Microlepidoptera Report 2011 this species was classified as local.

Rare in Leicestershire and Rutland, the Charnwood Lodge record of 5th July 2013 is only the second record for VC55. L&R Moth Group status = D (rare or rarely recorded).
