Length 9 to 13 mm. Although a variable species, the pronotum is always orangey red. The elytra can be various shades of brown and have pitted rows down their length.

Various habitats from meadows to wooded areas.

Peaking in summer

The larvae are found mainly under loose bark, and pupate in spring

Common in England and Wales but scarcer in Scotland.

Fairly frequent in Leicestershire and Rutland. There were a total of 39 VC55 records for this species up to March 2015.
