Length 6 - 9 mm. This species has a black head and thorax. The female abdomen is black with a whitish band on the fifth tergite. The male abdomen is entirely black.

Wherever the food plants are found, but also on umbellifers, where it catches other small insects

The light green larvae feed on the leaves of wild and cultivated Roses and also on those of Strawberry. They can be found at the back of the leaves. They hibernate as a pupa in the soil. Larvae are easily recognized by their yellowish-green colour with white dots on the thorax and abdomen and 1/2 inch long tapered bodies. The head is yellowish with black eye spots

Fairly frequent in England, but fewer records from elsewhere in Britain.

Occasional in Leicestershire and Rutland.
