Helleborus argutifolius grows to 1 metre, with stout stems bearing leaves composed of three leathery, spiny-toothed dark green leaflets. Bowl-shaped, nodding, pale green flowers 4 to 5 cm in diameter are borne in large open clusters.

Well recorded in some areas north of London to Oxford, a few more scattered records from elsewhere in Britain.

Rarely recorded in Leicestershire and Rutland.
