A large black species with wing length 6 - 8mm. The thorax and abdomen are shining black, and all femora and tibia are also black. This contrasts strongly with areas of silvery dusting on the face including the lower margin and hind corner of the eyes. There are also strong areas of dusting above the front and mid coxae. The thorax also has a silvery central stripe near the head. The wings often have a yellow tinge along the front margin and at the apex.

Cordilura picipes is very similar but can be distinguished by having only one pair of bristles on the scutellum. C. ciliata has two pairs.
