Size 8 to 20 mm. The adult moths have red-brown or ochreous forewings with a creamy costal streak.

The larva constructs a reddish brown, tubular silken case of only 5 or 6 mm. from which it feeds mainly on the buds of their chosen foodplants, Hawthorn and Apple.

Uncommon and local in Britain. In the Butterfly Conservation's Microlepidoptera Report 2011 this species was classified as Nationally Scarce A.

Rare in Leicestershire and Rutland. The Broughton Astley record of 16th June 2022 is the first for VC55.
