A large mushroom, with greyish-buff or brownish cap, strongly decurrent white or cream gills, and a bulbous stipe with club-shaped base. Spores are white.

Late summer and autumn.

Usually grows singly, rarely in clumps.

Widespread and quite common in Britain.

Fairly frequent in Leicestershire and Rutland.
