Wingspan 40 to 46 mm. A variable moth that is similar to Clouded-bordered Brindle but the markings are usually more distinct.

A mainly woodland species.

There is just one brood, flying in May to July.  The species frequently visits sugar, less frequently light.

The overwintering larva feeds on a range of grasses.

Scattered distribution over much of England, Wales and southern Scotland. In a recent survey to determine the status of all macro moths in Britain this species was classified as common.

Fairly frequent but not common in Leicestershire and Rutland. L&R Moth Group status = B (scarce resident or restricted distribution or regular migrant).
