Size 2.5 to 3.1 mm. It is a very dark reddish brown, almost black looking in the field.

Occurring in herbivore dung in just about any situation, but they may also be found in various types of decaying vegetable matter.

Become active from early spring.

Widely distributed, occurring quite frequently throughout mainland Britain.

Fairly frequent in Leicestershire and Rutland. There were a total of 46 VC55 records for this species up to March 2015.
