A medium-sized deciduous tree growing to 20 to 30 m tall with a broad, rounded crown. The leaves are opposite, palmately lobed with 5 to 7 lobes, 6 to 15 cm across.

Usually recorded as a planted tree, often on road verges.

Flowering April or May.

Deciduous.

Widespread but occasional records of this species in Britain.

Rarely recorded in Leicestershire and Rutland.
