Wingspan around 14 mm. A small dull brown moth with two or three darker spots.

Various habitats where a larval food source is available. Sometimes found in chicken houses.

The moths, which are on the wing from May to September, generally fly from late afternoon onwards.

The larvae of this 'clothes moth' actually feed in birds' nests and poultry houses, mainly on dried feathers and other dried animal and vegetable matter.

Distributed throughout much of the British Isles except the far north. In the Butterfly Conservation's Microlepidoptera Report 2011 this species was classified as local.

It appears to be uncommon in Leicestershire and Rutland, where there are few records. L&R Moth Group status = D (rare or rarely recorded).
