The caps are very variable in colour from pale greyish-white through pink, pink-brown and reddish brown, and the veil fragments can be grey, whitish, or pale brownish.  Gills are often spotted with pink, and the flesh develops a reddish stain when cut or bruised.   The stem is white initially, reddening and darkening as it matures.  The ring is large and striated.

The Grey-spotted Amanita, A. excelsa, can be similar but without any red staining
