Medium to tall, stiffly branched, hairless plant. Basal leaves oblong-heart-shaped, toothed, occasionally 3 lobed. Stem leaves short stalked or clasping. Flowerheads bluish, rather egg shaped, numerous, in branched clusters, 10 to 20 mm with up to 8 narrow spiny bracts.

Widespread but infrequent garden escape.

Rare as a garden escape in Leicestershire and Rutland it was not recorded in the 1979 Flora survey of Leicestershire.

It is not listed in the current checklist (Jeeves, 2011)
