Cap, stipe and gills are all a deep red colour, sometimes with a purplish tint.  The cap is up to 5cm in diameter, convex but flattening, dry and covered in fibrils.  Associated with Oak and Beech. 

Several other red webcaps are assocated with conifers and only rarely with deciduous species.
