An annual stemmed polypore, variable and irregular in shape and size.  The caps are tough and yellow-brown or buff in colour.  It has a central or acentric stem which blackens from the base as it ages.   Small, pale grey or cream pores, c. 6 per mm, darkening with age.   Spores are white and cylindrical

Polyporus badius has a dark stem (not just the base).

Widespread and fairly frequent in Britain.

Fairly frequent in Leicestershire and Rutland.
