Description

Wingspan 27-40 mm. This species has a green form (prasinaria) in addition to the typical reddish form.

Habitat

An inhabitant of coniferous woodland, but also venturing into gardens and parks.

When to see it

June to August.

Life History

The caterpillars feed on a variety of coniferous trees, including Scots Pine and Norway Spruce.

UK Status

Found throughout most of Britain, in suitable habitat it can be reasonably common. In a recent survey to determine the status of all macro moths in Britain this species was classified as common.

VC55 Status

Fairly common in Leicestershire and Rutland. L&R Moth Group status = A (common and resident)
