Whilst the adult sawfly is orange and black and very similar to other sawfly species in this genus, the larva is quite distinctive being black or very dark brown with raised pale spots.

Usually found on or around Skullcap species (Scutellaria sp.) although Gypsywort and Marsh Woundwort are sometimes used.

The larvae are associated with Skullcap species.

Widespread but infrequently recorded in Britain.

Rare or under-recorded in Leicestershire and Rutland. The larval record from Beacon Hill on 12th August 2013 is believed to be the fiirst record of this species in VC55
