5-6 mm. Females have a glossy black body and pale green/yellow legs and tegulae (males are rarely found in Britain).

The carina behind the genae runs at the sides of the head up to the level of the top of the eye. In the similar Aneugmenus temporalis, the carina only goes half way up the eye.

This species has a red ID rating and unless identified by a known expert you must provide a satisfactory explanation of how it was identified for the record to be accepted.

In areas where Bracken or other ferns are common.

Summer

Its larvae feed on Bracken and other ferns.

It is fairly common in Britain in areas of suitable habitat

Locally common in Leicestershire and Rutland.
