Wingspan 18-24 mm. The species has a rather banded pattern of reds and greys.

Preferring areas of old uncut Hawthorn hedge.

It has one brood, which flies in July and August, when it often is a visitor to the light-trap.

The larvae feed mainly on Hawthorn, but also sometimes on Rowan.

Distributed widely throughout much of Britain except the far North. In the Butterfly Conservation's Microlepidoptera Report 2011 this species was classified as common.

Common in Leicestershire and Rutland. L&R Moth Group status = A (common and resident)
