Description

This is a common species on nutrient-rich siliceous rocks such as granite. The thallus of this lichen is matt brown and has the appearance of dried mud. It reacts to bleach (C) by turning red.

Found on silica based rocks and stonework that are also nutrient rich.

When to see it

All year round.

UK Status

Common and widespread in Britain.

VC55 Status

Quite common in Leicestershire and Rutland.
