A small annual reflexed bracket, with thin appressed-hairy caps, usually with violet or purplish colours in the zonate caps.  Pores are small, rounded to angular, and may also have a violet tone.  There are several Trichaptum species associated with various deciduous or conifer species.  Some have pores that tend to split into tooth-like shapes.

There are several other small polypore brackets with zonate caps (e.g Turkeytail and Trametes)

Note: on the NBN, this genus is not assigned to a family.  It is closely related to Phellinus etc. (ref. Læssøe & Petersen 2019) so we have placed it in with these species in the Hymenochaetaceae until there is clarity regarding its place in the taxonomy.
