Length 5mm. This fly often holds its wings out at right angles to the body, tilted to face forwards. The wing pattern with a central clear area completely surrounded by opaque markings is distinctive.

Little is known of its life history. The larvae have been found under tree bark in the frass and workings of beetle larvae and it seems likely they will predate on small insects as with other members of the family.
