Often bearing many of the characteristics of its parents, particularly Sessile Oak (Quercus petraea) and care is needed to separate the hybrid from the pure species.

Sessile Oak (Q. petraea) has petiole >1cm; leaf-base cuneate to cordate but without auricles.

Good photographs are needed and it may be necessary to refer records to the County Recorder for confirmation.

Widely planted in country parks and wooded areas.

All year round but most easily recorded when in leaf in summer through to autumn.

Deciduous.

Widespread in Britain, particularly well recorded in the north and west.

Thought to be fairly frequent in Leicestershire and Rutland, but probably under recorded due to its similarity to the parent species.
