The rust causes leaves and petioles of Pignut (Conopodium majus) to become galled, swollen and twisted and often pale-coloured, with dark chocolate-brown telia.  There is no host alternation, and spermogonia or aecia are not produced; a few uredinia may be present amongst the telia. 

Pignut is an alternate host for Puccinia bistortae, with honey coloured spermogonia and bright yellow aecia, but no uredinia or telia
