Smaller (c. 12mm) than the cockchafer, with a metallic green head, pronotum and undersides, and chestnut-brown elytra.  Fresh specimens are very hairy.

The larvae feed on the roots of grasses and other plants in lawns and pasture land, where they are dug up by badgers and birds such as jackdaws, often damaging the turf.  They are sometimes considered to be a pest.
