7-11mm. Males and females are different. The female has a head marked with yellow, black and off-white. The thorax is black but with yellow tegulae and yellow corners to the pronotum. The abdomen is bicoloured with tergite 1 black and 2-5 orange. The wing stigma is also bicoloured.

Males have a black head but with yellow on the genae and temples. The abdomen is generally black but with varying orange-brown on tergites 4-5. The thorax is yellow underneath.

Larvae feed on Rosa species.

Larva feed on roses.

Adults: May - June

Pamphilius inanitus lays a single egg on the underside of rose leaflets. The larva then makes a leaf roll, adding other leaflets to form a cigar-like roll.

Uncommon but widespread in England.

Rare or under-recorded.
