It is now recognised that there are two Ocys species: O. tachysoides and O. harpaloides.   , Both males and females can only be separated by examination of the genitalia (or DNA analysis) - see two species for images of genitalia for both. If you are unable to separate the two species then record your find as Ocys harpaloides/tachysoides aggregate.

Length 4 to 6mm. Head and pronotum glossy reddish brown with head slightly darker. Elytra wider than pronotum, dark brown sometimes with a faint hint of metallic blue, side margin and suture often paler. Legs and antennae dull yellow to red-brown.

You must either have the identification confirmed by a known expert or provide clear images of the genitalia.

Under bark or other litter in damp woodlands. Under stones in more open damp sites.

May to October.

Widespread but uncommon - perhaps under-recorded due to the close similarity with Ocys harpaloides.

Uncommon or under-recorded in Leicestershire and Rutland.
