A hairy fly. It is black bodied but usually has some subtle pale grey markings on the abdomen and slightly shaded wings.

Most likely to be seen visiting umbellifers and other wayside flowers.

Peak time is probably June to August.

The larva of Lophosia fasciata is an endoparasitoid of Bishop's Mitre Shieldbug and Hawthorn Shieldbug.

Quite widespread in England and Wales.

Status in Leicestershire and Rutland not known.
