A large Leccinum associated with Aspen, oak and other broadleaved species.  The cap is rounded at first, then convex or flattening with a minutely scaly surface; typically bright foxy-red, orange or red-brown.  The cap has small flaps of tissue overhanging the edge.  The pores are yellowish or pale brown, discolouring brown if bruised.  The stem is whitish and covered in scales which are rusty-red to begin with, becoming darker as it ages.      

The Orange Birch Bolete, Leccinum versipelle, has dark brown or black scales on the stipe.

Photograph a fresh specimen from top down and in side view, and underneath to show pores and full length of stipe.  Note habitat and substrate, and associated tree species. Check for staining on cap, pores and stem base when cut and then bruised.  

Woodland, under oak or aspen; occasionally beech, lime or willow.
