One of the larger Anthomyid flies at 7-9mm. Males are easier to identify as they have yellow flanks on each tergite towards the front of the abdomen and dark marks on the base of each tergite dorsally. Femora are dark but the tibia are yellow in the basal part. Females lack the yellow side patches but have dark femora and yellowish tibia. On the thorax the prealar seta are at most half the length of the anterior notopleural seta.
