4-5.5mm. Hebecnema are small muscid flies, generally dark in colour, a plumose arista, four post sutural dorsocentral bristles, four rows of short acrostical bristles and an abdomen with a dark medial stripe. Hebecnema vespertina is probably the commonest and has a dark bronze-green abdome, black legs, bare eyes and an all-yellow haltere.

Good photos are required showing the top of the thorax and abdomen, plus a a side-view showing the haltere and legs.

Probably breeds in dung.

Relatively common and widespread.
