4-6mm. A slim fly with a brown-grey thorax. The abdomen has prominent yellow patches on a dark-brown basal colour. The halteres are yellow.

Sometimes enters houses and can be found around bins and waste sites.

Summer.

Larvae feed on decaying matter, including carrion.

Widespread and reasonably common in England, less common elsewhere.

Uncommon or under-recorded.
