Description
6-14mm. Usually a large tachinid fly with four dark stripes on the thorax and a chequered abdomen with grey and red-brown patches. The scutellum is red-brown. It has four dorsocentrals and bare eyes.
Similar Species
Exorista fasciata is similar.

Life History
The larvae are parasitoids of moth caterpillars, including Ruby Tiger), Cinnabar and The Drinker.
UK Status
Fairly common and widespread.
