Eristalis similis
Eristalis similis
A large and robust hoverfly closely resembling Eristalis pertinax and tenax but with very clear wings and subtly-different colouration on the front and mid tarsi.
May be easily confused with Eristalis pertinax or tenax.
- Body length approx. 13 - 16mm
- Face, femora and sides of thorax strongly dusted
- Front and mid tarsi partly or entirely dark
- Very clear, glassy wings without the brown smudges seen in E. pertinax or tenax
Unless identified by a recognised expert, good photos are required that show the key ID features.
Vagrant from Europe. First recognised in Britain in 1990 from a site near Coventry and expanding north.
Currently rare or under-recorded in Leicestershire and Rutland, possibly due to difficulty of identification, and confusion with E. pertinax and tenax.
