This is a true Cypress, with branchlets at the end of shoots spreading in 3 dimensions, unlike the flattened branchlets of species like Lawson's Cypress.  The narrowly fastigiate form (familiar from Mediterranean landscapes) is usually planted.  The branchlets are smoothly cylindrical, not roughened with obtuse leaf tips (ref. Stace, 4th edition).   The new cones are large and either lumpy or rounded, made of scales that each have a spine in the middle.

other Cupressus.  Monterey Cypress and Smooth Arizona Cypress also have spreading branchlets; Leyland Cypress sometimes does but has smaller cones.
