4-10mm. A very slim and elongate sawfly. Males have broad yellow apical bands on the abdomen but in females this is entirely black. Femora are black and the hind tibia is yellow with a black tip.

There are two Calameuta species in the UK. Females have long cerci that extend about as long as the saw sheath (when viewed dorsally). The similar Cephus sawflies (3 UK species) have shorter bodies and female cerci extend only half the length of the saw sheath

Calameuta filiformis has a black hind tibia (predominantly yellow in C. pallipes).

Summer

Widely distributed and reasonably common.

Probably under-recorded.
