Wingspan 18 to 22 mm. This is a very variable species, and there are other similar species.

First generation fly in May with a second generation in July and August.

The larvae feed on Goosefoot species (Chenopodium spp.)

Became established in South-east England in the 1950s and has since spread slowly, now reaching the English Midlands.

Rare in our area. First recorded in VC55 (Leicestershire and Rutland) in June 2025.
