A robust and long bodied species, the abdomen being entirely black usually without spots on tergite 2 but with faint whitish hairs. The wings have a dark patch, and the hind femurs are thickened.

Frequents woodland margins and lush meadows. Adults sometimes visit flowers such as Buttercups and Hogweed.

This species can be found from May to September peaking in June

Fairly frequent throughout England and Wales.

Fairly frequent in Leicestershire and Rutland.
