Wingspan 34 to 40 mm.

Despite its English name, this is a species of open grassland.

It flies in August and September, and can be attracted to light.

The caterpillars feed on various grasses, including mat-grass (Nodus stricta) and hair-grass (Deschampsia spp.).

Locally common throughout most of Britain. In a recent survey to determine the status of all macro moths in Britain this species was classified as common.

Most recently classed as fairly frequent but not common in Leicestershire and Rutland. L&R Moth Group status = B (scarce resident or restricted distribution or regular migrant) – however the species seems to be in decline and is very local in our area being concentrated mainly around Charnwood.
