This is an attractive species, though males and females have quite different yellow markings which can be confusing! The yellow 'commas' on the male are often quadrate and frequently merge together. In the female the commas are narrower. In both sexes, the yellow commas extend to the extreme lateral margins of the tergites.

Eupeodes luniger has similar yellow lunules but these stop before the lateral margins of the tergites.

Patches of flowers in fields, road verges, gardens and alongside hedgerows

March to November peaking in July and August.

This is a migratory species.

It is a common species, its numbers in Britain often boosted by migration.

Common in Leicestershire and Rutland.
