Description

7-10mm. This rather slim-bodied sawfly has a black abdomen with a broad red girdle on tergites 4 and 5. The legs are mainly red or yellow.

Associated with Great Burnet and Lady’s Mantle.

When to see it

May and June.

Life History

The larvae of Allantus calceatus pupate inside the stems of Great Burnet and Lady’s Mantle, but have also been found on Meadowsweet, Rosa and Bramble.

UK Status

Widespread but local in England and Wales.

VC55 Status

Rare or under recorded in Leicestershire and Rutland.
