A large flowering plant reaching 60 to 70 cm in height and the same across. It has large (10 to 13 cm across) bowl shaped flowers of deep red or pink, and large leaves which are divided into as many as nine leaflets. As a cultivated plant, ?double? varieties have also been produced.

Usually found as a garden escape and often near to habitation, or at tips.

Flowers in May or June.

Perennial.

Widespread but occasional as an escape from cultivation in Britain.

nfrequent or under recorded in Leicestershire and Rutland. It was not recorded in the 1979 Flora survey of Leicestershire, the first record coming from Groby Quarry in 1997.
